The downside of do-it-yourself divorce

There are many people in New Hampshire who contemplate or get divorced each year. Each divorce has its own set of unique elements that need to be taken into consideration. Some divorces may be pretty straight-forward especially if both parties are aware of financial accounts, agree on parenting issues and therefore can take a short time to finalize. Others may take some additional time due to numerous assets that need to be divided, disputes over child custody, alimony, or other relevant factors.

Some individuals may go into the divorce process thinking they can do everything by themselves. There are plenty of do-it-yourself programs out there and some people are even creating phone apps that may help you through the process. While these programs may seem enticing due to their low cost and potential ease, it's important to remember that these types of programs cannot offer the experienced advice that an experienced divorce attorney can provide which can save time, money and frustration in the long run.

An online program may not ask you all the right questions in order to make sure that all assets are included in the divorce process or include language needed to ensure protection from financial responsibility, accurate language to award or divide retirement accounts, or to provide insurance coverage after divorce. Even those individuals who have few assets or no children may forget to consider that they actually have quite a few assets or debts for division. Those assets may include investments, real estate, retirement funds, life insurance, and the like. They may also forget that there is potential to split debts such as personal loans, credit card debt, and student loans.

If you are considering a divorce, it doesn't hurt to sit down with a divorce attorney to discuss the unique details of your case. Those details may be a lot more important to your post-divorce future than you realize.
