Special concerns for later-in-life divorce

Hundreds of factors can impact a couple's long-term happiness. In some cases, couples find when their children are grown and move out of the family house, they are no longer compatible. In fact, some reports indicate that while the number of divorces as a whole are declining, more couples over the age of 50 are seeking a divorce. For older people in New Hampshire seeking a divorce, there may be some special considerations.

Many older individuals who have spent most of their adult lives married may have been out of the workforce for a large portion of their lives. In the aftermath of a divorce, they may be left with financial concerns. As a result, many older individuals seek spousal support; even on a temporary basis, such support can help during the transition following a divorce, including opportunities for seeking additional education in order to enter the workforce. Many even obtain a life insurance policy on their former spouse for further protection in the event of an unexpected death.

Often, it becomes necessary to ensure that an accurate financial picture is given. Some professionals recommend gathering at least three years of income tax return records to ensure that they match records provided during divorce proceedings. Additionally, making a video recording of household possessions can serve as a record, especially if some valuable possessions are removed from the house.

Divorce is often an emotional process. In their haste to complete proceedings, many people in New Hampshire want to ensure a swift end to the proceedings. However, when a person makes decisions based on emotions rather than logic, he or she can often fail to consider the long-term financial implications of their choices. An experienced attorney can help advise those going through a divorce to ensure that their decisions are in their best interests.
