When someone starts considering filing for divorce, they might reach out to family or friends who have gone through the process in order to find a lawyer. This may be a good starting point, but it’s always a good idea to talk to several attorneys before you hire one. It’s weird to think that some people may put more effort into choosing the right car than they do into choosing the right attorney.
The divorce process can take a while, so you want someone you can trust and feel comfortable around to help you through the process. When you meet an attorney for the first time, ask him or her how much experience they have in family law. You can also ask how many cases they have tried and what their feelings are on mediation or negotiations. It’s good to also know how much of their practice concentrates on family law. If they are primarily a criminal law attorney, you may not feel comfortable working with them.
Does the attorney work more with men or women? Is he or she comfortable with any unique issues that you may be dealing with? You want to make sure an attorney feels confident about representing you.
Finally, make sure you ask all the financial questions related to your divorce. What will the retainer fee be? Is the retainer refundable, and if so, in what situations? Will there be an assistant working on the case and how much do they charge as opposed to the attorney? How much will you get charged for phone calls and emails?
These are the types of questions that will help you make the right decision in terms of picking a lawyer to represent you through your divorce.
