High asset divorce creates conflict between dad, adult children

Marriages end every day in New Hampshire for a variety of different reasons. While all couples who choose to end their relationships often struggle with the decision, a high asset divorce can be complicated and result in more contention. For example, a couple that lives in another state may face lengthy proceedings after the woman announced her decision to seek a divorce.

The couple, an 88-year-old woman and 89-year-old man, have been married for 67 years. Although they had relatively humble beginnings, they now have real estate holdings estimated at $750 million. The woman claims that her husband was having an affair with a professional who helped with their business.

Instead of ending the relationship as she expected would happen, she claims that her husband became verbally abusive, prompting her to make the decision to end the marriage. Although the husband denies the allegations, a dispute with his children has also arisen. After the children voted to remove him from controlling some of their properties, he claims that a document prevents them from doing so. However, the children claimed that the document he produced had been altered with correction fluid.

Although reports indicate that the woman wants nothing more than an easy and fast end to their high asset divorce, it does not appear that this will be the case. While contention is often an element of divorce in New Hampshire, it does not have to be. Many couples are able to secure a peaceful, faster and less expensive resolution with the use of alternative dispute resolution methods. An attorney with experience with such methods can help come to an agreement without much of the bitterness often associated with such proceedings.
