On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2025 | Child Support |

In New Hampshire, either parent or the child’s legal guardian can request the courts for an update in their child support costs. With this in place, the filing parent or “petitioner” can become more aligned with their finances and adjust to their personal situation with ease.

To help provide guidance on this topic, here is how parents can file for a modification of their child support order in New Hampshire:

When can I update my child support order?

You may file a petition for your child support modification case on your own or with the help of a family law attorney. In New Hampshire, you can request the court for a review and update of your child support costs if:

  • Your existing child support order is at least three years old, or
  • You and/or your child are going through a significant change in circumstances

Keep in mind that your petition must indicate a valid reason for the request, as well as supplementary information that can help prove your reason.

What does “significant change in circumstances” mean?

While there is no set standard for a family’s change in circumstances, there are common forms of these changes that may warrant a change in your child support costs. Four of them include:

  • You or your ex had a notable increase or decrease in your salary
  • You or your ex’s family size expands
  • You or your ex becomes disabled
  • Your child’s educational and/or medical expenses have increased

It is important to note that your reason for the change must be fair and pursued with your child’s best interests in mind.

What if my ex amicably agrees to the change?

If you both agree to a change in your child support costs, you can file a proposed uniform support order (USO). This legal document must be submitted to the court, along with your personal data sheet, your financial affidavit forms and the completed “child support guidelines worksheet.”

By learning about New Hampshire’s child support modification laws and following its legal process, you can file your petition with promptness and adjust to your current situation with better flexibility.
